An easy walk from Town Hall station approx 10 minutes. Entry is free unless you are wanting to visit a particular special exhibit that’s not usually at the museum. So much to see! I particularly enjoyed the Westpac Long Gallery on the ground floor, the Wild Planet exhibition and of course the Dinosaur exhibits. If you like to know a bit about Australia’s creepy crawlers, make sure you visit the Surviving Australia exhibits. So much to see in all exhibits. The Billabong Waterhole cafe (on the 2nd floor) was also a nice pit stop and reasonably priced. I was particularly impressed with the cafes commitment to recycling. You can visit this museum for a few hours or get lost in it for a whole day. Well worth a visit, especially if you don’t know much about Australia’s flora and fauna and our South Pacific friends cultures. Something for everyone!

The Australian Museum, the nation's first, is a captivating journey through natural history and culture right in the heart of Sydney. It’s a place where prehistoric giants roam again in the phenomenal dinosaur exhibits, a guaranteed highlight for all ages. The galleries dedicated to Australia’s unique wildlife and the rich, living history of its First Nations peoples are both profoundly insightful and beautifully curated. We had some free time in Sydney, so opted for spending time at the Australian Museum! We weren't sure what to expect at a free museum, but were more than pleasantly surprised! We had two tour guides, Geoff and Nikki (sp?), one seasoned and one learning the ropes. Each brought their perspectives to the tour. Though Geoff's jokes were a bit dated at times, his knowledge was rich and memorable. Nikki's newness and genuine excitement made the tour for us. For me, this means one can find a tour guide to suite what you're looking for. Ask at the super helpful welcome desk! The exhibits were well done, organized by era / type, and clearly identified as to what you were seeing and the significance. It is a nice museum for a few hours, as it is thorough, but not exhaustive - maybe a 3-4 hour day would cover most of what one would want to see.

We recently visited the Australian Museum during our trip to Sydney and it turned out to be one of the best experiences of our vacation. This museum has everything you would expect and much more from fascinating species of birds and animals to fossils and precious stones. The dinosaur section was definitely the highlight for us, especially the detailed TREX display and cut section, which was absolutely amazing to see. The museum is very informative with clear signboards and well-organized exhibits throughout. Most areas are pram and wheelchair friendly, which made our visit very comfortable as a family. They also have restaurants/cafes on different floors, making it easy to relax during the visit. The dedicated kids’ play areas were wonderful, including a special play space for babies below one year where parents can accompany their little ones. Best part is entry is free! A must-visit place in Sydney for both kids and adults.

We visited the Australian museum for the "RELICS: A New World Rises" Lego exhibition. Being a Lego fan over the years it was great to see so much creativity on display, with each scene built around its own theme and filled with small details. The exhibition was well presented and easy to enjoy at a comfortable pace. After the exhibition we visited the main and free part of the Australian Museum. The permanent galleries cover Australian wildlife, minerals and gemstones, dinosaurs, ancient cultures and the First Nations collections. The dinosaur area features large skeletons and fossils, the mineral rooms have an impressive selection of crystals and rare pieces, and the cultural displays offer a clear look at history and traditions from across the region. There is plenty to explore throughout the building. There are other special events and exhibitions throughout the year, which gives you more reasons to visit the museum like we did. If you are coming in for a special exhibition it is best to buy tickets in advance, and if not general admission to the museum is free.
