I visited the gallery today (24th July, Friday) after seeing the recommendations online, but was met with the most disappointing and unpleasant experience with one of your staff members. The incident occurred between 3:10pm - 3:16pm while I was at the Level 1 gallery, at the back section with the painting robots. A male staff member was in charge, and at that time, there was about 3 other people in the room, myself included. On one side of the wall, there was a red and black painting, and on the opposite wall, there was an embroidered art piece (not pictured). While I was busy admiring the red and black painting, another visitor standing in front of me was also doing so, and he raised his phone to take photos. Instinctively, I stepped back, so that I could have a clearer view of the painting when all of a sudden, we were all startled by the male staff member yelling something like "MOVE OFF!" Frankly, I was in shock and it took awhile for me to realise that he was directing it at me. He did not start his sentence with "Excuse me, could you please..." but instead, decided that the appropriate response was to yell at a visitor. Spent our weekend here and did not disappoint. Easy access, not too crowded & such beautiful artwork. There were 3 stories filled with artwork from around the world. Our personal favourite was level 2 & 3 filled with artwork inspired by the Chinese culture. It had so much in depth meaning that resonated with us. We were able to learn so much about China and the past heritage through art. We highly recommend going in the mid morning around 11 am or 12pm. It’s not too busy then. If you’re fit enough (unlike us) take the stairs, if not, there are elevators available (there is a little bit of a wait). Also, start from level G - level 3. There is also a cafe that looked like Harry Porter with bird cages on the ceiling (looked so cool). We didn’t get to try the food but it was so busy around 2:30 pm. It’s best to go in the morning around 10:30am / 4pm.

My wife and I attended the 3pm guided tour of the Black Myth exhibition at White Rabbit Gallery and it was an absolute highlight of our Sydney visit. Our tour was conducted by Meng, the Assistant Curator. Meng added extraordinary value to the experience through their deep knowledge of China, Chinese history, the artists, and the broader cultural and political context behind the works. We arrived with a blank canvas and left genuinely moved and enriched. The exhibition itself is beautifully mounted. Around every corner there was another work that opened a new way of seeing contemporary Chinese art — often blending modern techniques with historical references, myth, politics, personal struggle, and the continuing influence of yin and yang. Meng’s explanations gave real intimacy to the artists’ lives and intentions, and helped us understand the depth behind the works. The staff throughout the gallery were warm, friendly and welcoming. It is also remarkable that this gallery and collection have been made possible through the vision and generosity of Judith Neilson. Sydney’s art lovers are indebted to Judith Neilson’s generosity and commitment to art. White Rabbit gallery is a privately owned and features works from Neilson’s personal collection of Chinese contemporary art. It’s easy to get to, just a short walk from Central Station and Broadway. Entry is free and there are usually two major exhibitions per year. The current exhibition The hooligans is worth seeing. It is proactive, challenging and inspiring. If you haven’t seen it yet get there before it closes. The gallery has a teahouse and small gift store. The gallery staff are knowledgeable and informative. There is a virtual tour on their website if you can’t make it in person.

A contemporary Chinese art gallery with lots of unique pieces you won’t find elsewhere. It really inspired me and sparked new ideas. It’s not a big space, but it has three floors, and you can take your time with each piece, which makes the experience very fulfilling. I’d definitely come back!
