A rather striking piece of public art, a life-sized (or near life-sized) bus, constructed from polished aluminium, and mounted vertically. But what is the significance of such a thing to Parramatta ? An informative plaque tells the story. Parramatta rugby league coach Jack Gibson purchased such a bus to be used to accommodate his team, after the Cumberland Oval grandstand was burned down after a rather spirited party to celebrate the 1981 premiership win got out of hand. Inscriptions on the side of the sculpture commemorate William Francis King, the so-called "Flying Pieman", who, legend has it, would sell pies to passengers boarding ferries at Circular Quay, then race to Parramatta to sell them more pies when they arrived. Legend has it... Also remembered is Rosie Bint Broheen, one of the first women of Lebanese heritage to purchase property in Parramatta. The sculpture is also said to reference the plight of young women who faced harsh treatment at the Parramatta Industrial School for Girls, an institution that was a sort of reform school of it's day.
