Macquarie wanted a permanent hospital for Sydney after Britain declined to fund one. In 1810 three contractors accepted spirits-import privileges, convict labour and public supplies in return for construction. From 1868, Lucy Osburn’s Nightingale-trained system gave nurses wider responsibility for ward discipline, cleanliness, ventilation and patient care. Cooks and servants remained under a separate lay superintendent, dividing responsibility from authority. During the same period, doctors increasingly condemned the hospital’s physical conditions; by 1875, pyaemia, a severe bloodstream infection producing abscesses, and erysipelas, an acute bacterial skin infection, made even minor operations unsafe. The 1878 competition consequently sought a “modern pavilion hospital”. Thomas Rowe’s winning scheme was reduced, then modified to meet medical requirements. Sydney’s experience showed that organised healthcare depended on resources to provide it, buildings shaped around safe treatment, and authority aligned with responsibility for care.

My father attended the emergency department with severe eye pain. He has a complex medical history, including a heart and kidney transplant, and is blind in his left eye. He travelled to the hospital by public transport seeking urgent medical attention. My father also approached reception during the wait to express concern about how long he had been waiting and the severity of his condition. He was told there were another 5–7 people waiting ahead of him. He felt that his concerns were dismissed and that the staff member did not seem to care about the distress he was experiencing. After waiting approximately 2½ hours, he approached reception to ask how much longer he would need to wait and was told there were still seven people ahead of him. During this time, he observed other patients arriving after he had been waiting who were seen and left before him. From his perspective, many of these patients did not appear to be presenting with emergency conditions, which left him feeling overlooked and concerned. Given the severity of his pain, his blindness in one eye, and his existing health conditions, he felt unable to continue waiting and ultimately left without receiving medical ass

I recently visited Sydney Eye Hospital and honestly had a great experience from start to finish. The doctors, nurses, and staff were all professional, caring, and made me feel comfortable throughout the process. Considering it was a Sunday, I was actually surprised at how reasonable the wait time was. Everything moved along much better than expected, and the staff still took the time to properly explain things and answer questions without making me feel rushed. You can tell the people there genuinely care about patients. Very thankful for the treatment and overall experience. Highly recommended.

I arrived in the eye emergency dept around 0715. I was triaged by 0745. I was seen by a nurse twice by 0845. I am very happy with the responses so far.

Reception staff are very abrupt. Don't expect any smiling faces or pleasantries from them.Check in on arrival is confusing because they don't ask you to use the electronic check In machines in their appointment letter so everyone goes to the reception desk who then direct you back to the machines. Just adding a line in the letter would solve that but maybe that's too hard.
