Wynyard Station, located in Sydney’s CBD near George and York Streets, was designed by John Bradfield and opened on March 19, 1932, just before the Sydney Harbour Bridge, following construction that began in 1927 using the β€œcut and cover” method beneath Wynyard Park. Originally built with six platforms, it featured a streamlined Art Deco design with dark wooden paneling and Sydney’s first escalators, connecting the York Street entrance to the concourse. Platforms 1 and 2 served as a tram terminal until 1958 before being converted into an underground car park, while platforms 3–6 carried the main railway lines. Known for its iconic wooden escalatorsβ€”later replaced in the 1950s but commemorated in the 2017 β€œInterloop” artwork, the station has undergone several upgrades, including lifts added in 1999. Today, Wynyard remains a major transport hub with multiple exits to George Street, York Street, Clarence Street, and Wynyard Park, surrounded by shops, eateries, and lively bars such as Stitch Bar, Uncle Ming’s, and York Lane, with Pitt Street Mall and Barangaroo also within walking distance.

Stopped by Wynyard Station on York Street and was blown away by the Interloop artwork above the escalators. It’s such a clever tribute to the old wooden escalators and a reminder of how far Sydney’s trains have come. A beautiful blend of past and future, perfect for a place where so many daily journeys begin and end.

After they opened the Barangaroo tunnels, straight from the station we can practically walk to Barangaroo under cover, safe from rain and weather. And that is not the full story, the upgrades themselves are architectural master piece. The only thing I would say is that the platforms are no longer wide enough to accommodate the peak hour crowd. The station has lots of shops just outside the gates, so good for some quick breakfast on the go. At the time of writing this, there are still some construction works going on, and that could only mean improvements. Plus I'm looking forward to the tram service to begin at the street level.

Since renovations Wynyard station is now world class with great access points, clear signage and even art installations. Always clean and very friendly staff to be found everywhere assisting people with their journey.

I love the new Wynyard! Beautiful new building with great architecture and design details. So glad they kept the wooden escalators as a very cool installation just above where they used to be installed. Also the tunnel to Barangaroo is definitely worth the walk, great architecture and a very pleasant/efficient way of getting to Kent Street and Barangaroo.
