About Abbey's Bookshop

Abbey's Bookshop at 131 York Street in the heart of Sydney (right next to the Queen Victoria Building) is an iconic Sydney independent bookstore known for its specialisations in history, science and crime fiction - but of course we cover the full range of categories. Since 1968 we've been curating a distinctive collection sourced from publishers large and small, and academic presses from around the world - where ideas grow.

Our customers are life-long learners and knowledge-seekers and express our place in their lives with comments like this one, "Yours is the best shop of its kind in the country so please keep going." So hopefully that gives you an idea of what we do and the passion we bring to it. See you soon or visit us online.

Have been purchasing my books from this wonderful book store for over 25 years. I see it also as my own personal toy shop which could spend hours in there. A great range of books and if they haven’t got one I’m looking for they will do their upmost to source it from overseas. And it’s great to see Dave back working in there a couple days a week who has been a great help over the years as all the wonderful staff in that grand store are. More books pleeeeeeeze.

Fantastic customer service from Dylan regarding my online order. They were so attentive and replied to emails very quickly. The store itself is amazing because it has a really good collection of books that are sometimes hard to find. My order was carefully packaged and arrived in Melbourne just under 5 working days. I'm super grateful for the amazing service and speedy shipping. I'm already raving about the store to all my friends. Thank you for being absolute stars!

A great selection of books and accessories, all well presented in various sections. Staff are really polite and helpful. Have a wander around and see what you find or ask for suggestions. Overall, a fantastic bookshop for bibliophiles and everyone else.

I was hoping to leave a positive review, but unfortunately I can’t. I would not recommend books from this publisher. The translation appears to be machine-generated or AI-assisted, and the quality is extremely poor, especially for a book that costs $33. The text is often difficult to understand and, in many places, simply does not make sense. I have already raised this issue with the bookstore and hope they will take greater care when selecting books from this publisher in the future.

Abbey’s Bookshop is the kind of place that quietly reminds you why physical bookshops still matter. It’s not flashy, or full of gimmicks - the moment you start browsing the shelves, the depth & care of the collection speaks for itself. The range is impressive across both fiction / non-fiction, with classics and history standing out as particular strengths. What really sets Abbey’s apart is the feeling that the books are chosen for you, not just stocked. You’ll find titles here; especially in history, politics, and the classics - that are hard to come across elsewhere, alongside newer works that clearly belong. It’s a place where I have wandered without a specific title in mind and still leave with something worthwhile. The atmosphere is calm and inviting, encouraging long, unhurried browsing. Staff are very knowledgeable, genuinely helpful, and happy to chat if you want recommendations / guidance, without ever being overbearing. If you value thoughtful curation, serious reading, and a bookshop with character, Abbey’s is well worth a visit - and always worth a revisit.
