Justice and Police Museum

This was the first museum I visited after arriving in Sydney, and it ended up being such a memorable experience. The theme is really unique, and the fact that it’s located in a former police station makes it even more interesting. Huge thanks to Peter at the information desk!! After finding out I was visiting from China, he kindly gave me a Chinese guide booklet. Later, I met him again inside the museum, and he took the time to share the history and culture of the place in such an engaging and vivid way. It made the whole visit feel so much more immersive. Highly recommend!

This is a really interesting and, yes, fun place to visit for anyone who enjoys "true crime" stories and/or has an interest in the development of police evidence gathering. The section on famous criminals includes bush rangers and gangsters but I particularly enjoyed the stories about the spate of housewives bumping off their horrible hubbies (and other annoying relatives) in the 50s by putting rat poison in their food. One of these was a 63 year old grandmother whom bumped off 4 of her rels and attempted to do away with another 3. Just like the recent "mushroom murders" she never explained why she did it.

This is a small, quiet museum with free admission (advance online reservations are recommended per their website). The museum is a short walk from Circular Quay and the Sydney Opera House, making it a nice place to step away from the crowds. It may not be ideal for very young children, as the experience involves quite a bit of reading and some of the photographs could be distressing. While it’s great that entry is free, if you have limited time in Sydney and enjoy visiting museums, this might not be a top priority. On a practical note, the side of the museum along Phillip Street is also where the Hop-On Hop-Off bus tour stop is located.

This museum is full of fascinating history of the darker side of Sydney. The building was once a police station and court house and has a lot of fascinating items from the past. I personally love the old mug shots with the clothes they used to wear are so stylish. Free to enter on the weekends, this museum is definitely worth visiting.

We had an hour to spare and decided to check this place out. It’s an old police station, cells and court rooms now a Museum. It was free to enter, interesting, clean toilets, friendly staff and informative. My favourite was the cells and old court room. Families seemed to be enjoying themselves with the kids getting photos taken in the old prisoners dock and cells. I’m sure you could spend longer there but 45 minutes was enjoyable and enough for us.
